About Me

Give me a dose of science fiction and fantasy, mix it with a chai tea latte and I am a happy girl.

Put me in front of my computer with ample free time and I am in seventh Heaven. My characters come alive and stories blossom.

I am a warrior, Nephilim or a freak with a mutant power. I live in worlds inspired by real life but created in fantasy or dropped deep in the paranormal. Primarily geared towards upper young adult, on occasion one of my stories may be known to wander into the realm of middle grade or adult literature.

This is me in a short answer – a mother, nature lover, a believer, total geek. I harbor a strong love for action movies, good books, great television, Joss Whedon,  muscle and classic cars and I’m 100% addicted to music. Can you say surgically attached to my iPod? Oh – and I never, ever get enough sleep. That’s me in a nutshell.

  1. Always nice to meet a fellow geek. I also talk to dead people, spiritual feelings can be very powerful motivators for writing. Looking forward to reading your blog.

Geeks totally rule! We will one day dominate the earth. Thanks for stopping by Serena!

  3. Debra, I bookmarked your blog. Like many writers, you’re an artist who owns a pretty sense of vitality and balance when it comes to design. You speak of your sister as an ever-present partner and source of motivation. I’m curious to read more about her. I grew up with three brothers. One of them died in April 2010. I miss him, yet I feel as if he’ll forever be a part of who I am.

I heart Buffy and all things Whedony.

  5. Never heard the upper YA part before but I know exactly what you mean. That’s my audience too.

  8. I always felt a little crazy until I started embracing the stuff that went on in my head, and letting it out on pages…digital as of yet though they may be. Happy to have “met” you a little here. I love Greek mythology, though I still owe my 7th grade English teacher a report on the subject. Had it all written, too. Just never did the final draft. Hmm…meant to be a writer (a la procrastinate much)? I think maybe so. Fixing that THIS year as I FINISH & prep my novel, #Bluebirds, to pitch at Chicago Writers Conference 2013! Dammit!

Hi Kim! It is a pleasure to meet you! You’ve found my “About Me” page sadly in need of an update. Hopefully I will find the time in my schedule to deal with that soon. So many things – so little time. I’m fairly certain that missing report you owe your 7th grade English teacher is keeping them up at night. Karma, you know how she can be. 😉 But seriously, congratulations on having a finished manuscript ready to pitch. That’s very exciting! Yay! That’s half the battle. Now don’t give up. Keep on, keeping on. What isn’t right for one person may be exactly right for the next. Always remember that. You’ve put together a very beautiful blog. I took the tour late last night/early this morning. Looks like you’re working with some very talented writers.

  9. Oh my gosh, Debra…”working with some very talented writers”…it’s all me! I cannot tell you how good that makes me feel. *sniff* My manuscript is still in progress, but that’s the deadline I’m giving myself, and thus it will be so. Come hell or high water, I will keep on keeping on (I say that all the time, btw). 😀 Bless you for taking some time on my site, and especially for responding. I’m truly touched. Best of everything to you as well. Look forward to getting to know you, our WANAMama, and all the other wonderful writers who participate. I feel like it’s a wonderful place to have landed to move forward in a meaningful way.

Hi, I noticed that you ‘liked’ a story of mine, The Rat.
Very few people read that story of mine. Maybe it is too far back on my blog or maybe the title puts them off, but you found it, and you read it and you ‘liked it’. Thank you.
It is of course a true story and because I lived it, it is close to my heart.
    I’m glad you enjoyed it.
I’m enjoying your girl power stuff……. a favourite at my place is Firefly. The females in it are strong and interesting. Generally blokes seem to have trouble writing good female parts. Mt Whedon has the knack and I agree with you about wishing he would return to the small screen.

    Be well.

The Rat was a very special story. Those that are dear to our heart, often harder to write, usually make the best stories.
Whedon does a great job with the girl power. I’m glad you are enjoying it. I believe in everyone being empowered. I, of course, have more experience with girls being that I am one. I’m watching my son, though, and learning from him how some boys handle themselves. He may be a slightly different case with his Aspergers. But then, that could always make for an interesting angle should I choose to pursue it some day for a story. Keep up the writing! Every time makes you a strong, more confident author. 🙂 Thank you so much for stopping by araneus1. I hope you’ll come visit me at my new site sometime: DebraKrist.com
